Bump and Prolonged Pain in Ankle After Fall

Question

Dear TAI Experts:

A little over a month ago, I fell down a few stairs. I landed on my left foot and backside. I think that I fell and my foot slid under me. It hurt for about 2 weeks. For the first couple days after the fall, I had to wear an ace bandage. I haven’t been to the Dr. yet. I figured it was just a sprain. It has been about 1 month and a week and it still hurts when I turn my foot. I can’t sit on the floor with my legs crossed. I can’t sit on the couch with my left foot under my right leg. It’s very uncomfortable. I also have a bump about the size of a nickel about a half an inch below my ankle bone. It’s kind of on the top side of my foot. What could this bump be? Is it possible that I did something to my foot rather than my ankle? And is it normal for something like this to last this long?

Answer

Without a physical examination, I cannot speak specifically regarding what is wrong with your ankle/foot. A minor ankle sprain involves an overstretching of the ligaments of the ankle and would typically be healed within five weeks if it is allowed to rest and heal appropriately. What you are describing could possibly be more than just a simple ankle sprain. There are numerous bones in the foot. These bones can be displaced, especially from a fall like you are describing. The misaligned bone could be the “bump” you are describing. I suggest you schedule an appointment with your physician or physical therapist. They can evaluate your foot and determine the best course of treatment at this time.
