Long Recovery After Elbow Surgery

Question

Dear TAI Experts:

I had an elbow lateral release surgery in February 07. I am still having major pain and weakness in hand. My arm won’t even straighten out. Do you think I should have an MRI done or is this just normal in some cases?

Answer

Without doing an examination I cannot comment on your specific condition, but I can make some general comments. I recommend you discuss these questions with the orthopedic surgeon that performed the lateral release and/or your physical therapist. The surgeon will have a better idea of what kind of outcomes you should expect from the surgery. After performing an examination, a physical therapist can help to determine what is still limiting your ROM and help you develop a strengthening and mobilization program specific to your needs.
