Vertigo Helped By Physical Therapy?

Question:

Dear Ask the Experts:

Hi, I have occasional bouts of vertigo and think it may be related to inner ear problems. I recently heard about someone being treated by their physical therapist for this condition.  Is this a viable treatment option?  Thanks in advance.

Answer:

Physical Therapists are trained in evaluation and treatment of inner ear problems causing vertigo and the treatments can be very effective. Some Physical Therapists are specialized in treatment of vestibular and balance disorders and have received advanced training in this area. A physical therapy evaluation with a Physical Therapist who specializes in vestibular and balance disorders would be highly recommended. Treatment may include positional techniques and exercises to correct how the inner ear is working to eliminate vertigo.
