Doctors of Physical Therapy

CANY_StaffShotAll of our PTs are Doctors of PT:
An explanation of the transition to a doctoring profession and becoming an entry point for musculoskeletal care

You may not be familiar with your physical therapist referring to themselves as Doctor, but as our profession has grown and evolved of the years, so too has our level of training. In the beginning days of physical therapy and physical therapist was able to complete a 4 year Bachelor degree in order to be able to treat. As time went on, and the knowledge of the human body and rehabilitation progressed, the standard of education for our profession transitioned to a Master’s degree. In 1997 the first Doctor of Physical Therapy degree was cultivated and born. Currently of the 213 physical therapy schools in the United States 206 are Doctoral (DPT) programs and the goal of the American Physical Therapy Association is for every Physical Therapist to be a Doctor of Physical Therapy by 2020.

You might be wondering how this affects you as a patron of Therapeutic Associates Canyon Park Physical Therapy. Each of our physical therapists has graduated from a top tier Doctorate level physical program. We have each participated in a 3 years of intense scholastic training as well as up to 12 months of mentored internship training in order to hone our skills and progress our knowledge. We also participate in continuing education throughout the year to stay up to date on current research and provide the best care to our patients. As physical therapists we may or may not all expect to be referred to as Doctor but just remember the gold standard of schooling and training has been achieved in order to provide you, the patient, the best possible care.
