2012 Fitness Resolution Takes Some Tenacity and a PSP “Resolution Reward”!
If your 2012 Resoltion is a health, fitness or even a financial goal, one key to successfully reaching your New Years Resolution goals is to make a behavioral change. In order for that change to become habit one must be tenacious and stick with the plan. You might have heard an expression that says “it takes three weeks in order to form a new habit.” Unfortunately, this vague statement is not only untrue but it has no scientific basis. As a matter of fact the myth may have been propagated in a book written by a plastic surgeon who observed that many of his amputees took an average of 21 days to adjust to the loss of their limb. He went further to claim that we take somewhere around 21 days to adjust to major life changes. While this may be true of motor learning, it says nothing about a willing change in behavior. In actuality, depending on the complexity of the behavioral goal, (low complexity: eat an apple a day, higher complexity: do 200 sit ups per day) it can take anywhere from 20 to 250 days to form a new habit. However, the average amount of time to establish a habit is 66 days (Lally et al., 2009).
So, what’s the point? In order to successfully reach that resolution goal we must be persistent and tenacious. After all, to coin some popular clichés, “Rome wasn’t built in a night” and “nothing worth doing was ever easy.” The adult fitness classes at PSP may at least be simple solutions to those fitness goals for 2012! The only thing you have to do is walk through the door. Our “Resolution Rewards” program allows all newcomers one week free of an adult fitness class that suits them. At PSP you will find a positive and safe small group exercise environment where our clients as well as our trainers will provide you with that extra bit of motivation that you might require. We have a class suited for many abilities and intensity levels.
