Marathon Moments – The Race

A Marathon Moment…with Cindy F.
Well, we did it! My running partner Nikki and I ran a marathon – the famed 26.2!!! What an amazing experience….The day began a bit cool, but by 6:30 the sun was shining and it was clear that it was going to be the nicest day we have had in 2011. You could feel the adrenaline rush through the crowd as 8000 participants waited for the 7:00 AM starting time to arrive; it definitely had a celebratory feel (and pure relief that the weather was going to be perfect for running). As expected, the route was wonderful; flat and mostly scenic as much of the trail was through parks and along the river. We strolled along pretty well until mile 19- then it got a lot tougher but we just kept telling each other that “we got this”. When we saw the “25 mile” banner, I just about cried because it was at that moment that I knew we were going to cross that finish line and we would be done running. As we approached the finish, our families were in the stands yelling for us, cheering us on. I can’t describe the feeling of pure joy as we hugged and experienced the ending of an 8th month journey to reach our goal. Wow, I ran a marathon…maybe now I can think of myself as a true “runner”.
