Warm Up Before Your Workout (Video)
Warming up before playing sports, working out or any other physical activity is a great way to improve performance and prevent injury. This used consist of “stretching out,” where a series of static stretches would be performed. In static stretching muscles are held on stretch for a long period of time (20 -30 seconds or more). Recent research has shown that static stretching can actually increase injury risk (due to temporary weakening of the muscles and tendons from the prolonged stretch) and decrease performance. It is now recommended that static stretches be performed after physical activity (to give the body adequate recovery after prolonged stretching) to increase general flexibility.
The current thinking on warm-up dynamic stretching, in which movements are continuous and positions are not held for long periods of time. Studies have shown this continuous motion more effectively elevates core body temperature and muscles and tendons do not need the recovery time to regain their maximum strength that static stretching would require.
We have created a 5 minute dynamic warm-up routine to help you prevent injury and get the most out of your workouts. Follow the link below to see the video.
