The Race to Robie Creek is a Rite of Spring for runners in Boise, Idaho. The route climbs about 2000 feet in 8.5 miles and drops 1700 feet in 5 miles prompting the nickname, “the Northwest’s toughest half marathon." About 24 hours after crossing the finish line, my quadriceps muscles cry out their agreement with this half marathon’s moniker as I descend the stairs in my house. The limping soreness increases for the next two days and then as quickly as the pain came on, it slowly improves and I am back to running normally (and surprisingly stronger) within two ...

Prevention and Treatment of the Iliotibial Band
Thanks for listening to my brief talk on lliotbial Band Friction Syndrome last Saturday. As your training distances increase, your risk of developing Iliotibial Band Syndrome increases. Iliotibial Band Syndrome (or IT Band Syndrome) is a condition that is commonly seen in runners. The chief symptom is pain on the lateral aspect of the knee joint (see anatomy below) and the onset is usually after the athlete increases their distance, starts hills, runs on a surface with significant camber (slanted) or a change in shoe wear.
Runners with excessive knee hyperextension, knee varus (bow-legged) or valgus ...

Toward the end of my 2010 track season at the University of Idaho, I began having pain and tightness in my arch. I continued to run on it, and eventually it became extremelly swollen and painful. After the season ended I took about a month off from running, but I continued to have pain and swelling when I began training for road racing again. Uncertain of what my initial injury was and frustrated with the pain, made an appointment with TAI after a referral from a fellow athlete. Rob Barnes diagnosed me within 20 min of examining me; my injury was a posterior tibialis tendonitis. For the next 3 weeks, I came to the clinic twice a week to receive ASTYM treatments and do running specific strengthening, stretching, and balancing exercises. My program was created by Rob Barnes, and I worked with various other trainers at the clinic to complete my therapy. I also ran on the clinic’s state-of-the art zero gravity treadmill, which allowed me to run at a fast pace without putting much stress on my injured foot. After only two weeks, I noticed positive results. My foot and ankle were less swollen, I didn’t have excess swelling after running, and I was running with much less pain than before! After 3 weeks of treatment I came in once a week to receive therapy. By this time, the pain and swelling had subsided. After my treatment at TAI, I continued to train and race; I won the Robie Creek half marathon about two months after my therapy. Over the past few months I raced in other road races, including my first marathon! I had a great experience at TAI–the staff are friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend them!
After finishing my first full triathlon season, I couldn’t be more thankful to the therapists at Therapeutic Associates- State Street! Since playing collegiate soccer, I’ve had nagging quad and calf pain and I wasn’t sure how my body would hold up through a long triathlon season. In preparation for my first full Ironman distance triathlon in Louisville, KY, the therapists at TAI on State Street performed ASTYM and ultrasound therapy on my nagging injuries and showed me valuable strengthening and stretching exercises to allow me to continue to train at a high level. At Ironman Louisville, I won my age group and qualified for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, HI. As expected, I had beaten my body up considerably in Louisville and had only a six week turn-around before racing in the World Championships. By utilizing the anti-gravity treadmill at the TAI clinic and continuing to receive treatment from the therapists, I was able to rebound enough to have a memorable race in Kona. I owe much of my success this triathlon season to the helpful and knowledgeable staff at Therapeutic Associates on State Street. Thank you!
