Running a marathon can be stressful on the musculoskeletal system. This talk is designed to instruct the runner in all aspects of post-marathon recovery in order to prepare the body for the next event. Dr Wayner will go over what to do immediately after the race (as well as the following weeks after a marathon) to maximize recovery, when it is okay to start training again, and how to progress back to your normal routine.

Marathon and Half Marathon Preparation

This class is designed to cover specifics about basic marathon and half marathon preparation, including tips to maximize training and avoid common pitfalls that could lead to injury or poor race-day performance during your final weeks of training. Instructors will discuss information about the Eugene Marathon and Half-Marathon course, and how to plan for race day success. An open forum will be provided to answer racers’ questions in regards to their training.
Common Running Injuries for the Endurance Runner: Prevention and Treatment

Common running injuries that plague many runners during their training, such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, iliotibial band syndrome, shin splints, and runner’s knee. This lecture will discuss the cause and potential solutions for these injuries and how to recognize when it is okay to train through an injury and when it is time to see a healthcare professional.

Preparation for a long distance race should include more than just running. The final lecture will focus on the other aspects of a training program that runners tend to forget. This includes establishing a proper warm up, focusing on proper form through the use of training drills, as well as strength and cross training as supplemental exercise.
