Men’s Health – Pelvic Pain & Dysfunction: Bethany Physical Therapy

Our Approach

At Therapeutic Associates Physical Therapy, our approach to treating pelvic pain (including Non-Bacterial Chronic Prostatitis, NBCP) involves observing how the body utilizes the pelvic floor muscles, along with the tranversus abdominus, lumbar multifidi, and diaphram. Typically, these “core stabilizers” work in a coordinated manner to stabilize the trunk by contracting and relaxing throughout the day. In most cases of pelvic pain, the pelvic floor muscles become overactive and have a difficult time relaxing, producing increased tension in the pelvic floor. This continual tension creates pressure on the multiple structures in and around the pelvic floor, causing pelvic pain.

During treatment our therapists will work to:

  • Relax the pelvic floor muscles using a variety of techniques
  • Evaluate and correct how the body is over-utilizing the pelvic floor and related muscle groups
  • Return the trunk muscles to normal patterns of activation and relaxation

Common Symptoms:

  • Pain in the genitals, groin, rectum, pubic bone, tailbone, and low back
  • Urinary problems, including urgency, frequency, reduced stream, pain during urination, and frequency at night
  • Pain during or after intercourse
