Golf Performance

TPI-certified-logoDo you want to hit the ball longer? Play with a more consistent swing? Lower your scores?

The best golfers in the world have made fitness an integral part of their game and have forever changed Golf. Par 5s are now reachable in 2, fatigue is not as much of a factor, ball striking is more consistent, and scores continue to drop. Technological improvements in equipment have helped, but more than ever, Golf Professionals are investing in physical health. Most amateurs, however, have not taken advantage of getting their bodies in the best physical condition to play the game they love. It may be the shortage of proper fitness programs specific to golf, it may be that the information out there just doesn’t seem to fit the individual, or it may be the fear of injury or the lack of a personal plan based on individual needs. One thing is for sure - investing in your physical health will add to the enjoyment of your game!

Titleist Program

Titleist began a program in 1995 that documented the common features of the professional golf swing. They found that all golfers sequence their swing exactly the same across all skill levels, from backswing to follow through. Although styles differ, the sequencing remains constant. The results of this research led to the formation of the Titleist Performance Institute (TPi) and the development of an evaluation method that measures all facets affecting performance, including strength, flexibility, neuromuscular control, joint mobility, balance, and power. What prevents the amateur golfer from playing like a pro is the breakdown of this sequence at some point during the swing. This is often caused by physical limitations that can be fixed with proper intervention. For instance, a weak “core” (abdomen and back) will prevent golfers from staying in their posture through their golf swing, resulting in inconsistent ball striking.

The Unique Difference

Therapeutic Associates’ Golf Performance Program is unique in that your Certified TPi Instructor is also a licensed physical therapist and avid golfer. This unique combination of skill sets offers unparalleled insight into the physical limitations affecting the golf swing. Your physical therapist’s experience working in orthopedics and sports medicine, combined with the TPi program will provide you a comprehensive, golf-specific physical examination and a customized golf strength and flexibility program specific to your individual needs.

TPi’s revolutionary research on golf biomechanics and golf fitness over the years has resulted in a compilation of normative data of multiple body parts, which are vital to the golf swing. The physical examination completed by the certified instructor compares the client to the average measurements found on the PGA and LPGA tours. The examination assesses all physical factors affecting the golf swing to identify areas that may need to be improved for the most efficient golf swing. The evaluation will identify deficits so the instructor can compile an individualized golf performance and conditioning program to improve deficient areas.
