Massage Therapy Techniques:
Swedish Massage is a systems of 5 strokes (Long gliding strokes, kneading, friction, passive joint mobilization, and percussions techniques) used on the more superficial layers of muscles and connective tissue to stimulate circulation, relieve muscle tension, and promote general relaxation. Swedish massage is often given as a complete, full-body technique, though it is often combined with other massage techniques to achieve specific results.
Deep Tissue Massage technique is used to release chronic patterns of muscular tension in the body through slow strokes and deep pressure on the hypocontracted areas, either following or going across the grain of muscles, tendons, and fascia. The massage therapist must apply a deeper pressure to access deeper layers of tissue than Swedish massage, which is why it is called deep tissue massage. The massage technique is also specific to the condition being treated. The practitioner will often focus first on the superficial fascia and musculature of the affected area with Swedish techniques, then move to the deep tissue techniques to access the deeper layers of connective tissue and muscle.
Neuromuscular/Trigger Point Massage utilizes a protocol of techniques used to balance the body’s central nervous system with the musculoskeletal system. Based on neurological function and how the central nervous system initiates and maintains pain, the goal of this type of massage is to help relieve pain and dysfunction by understanding and alleviating the underlying causes. In this protocol, the practitioner will use techniques to increase local blood flow to an area and release trigger points, those intense “knots” of muscle tension that refer pain to other parts of the body (they become trigger points when they seem to trigger a pain pattern). The practitioner combines positioning and specific pressure to the trigger points in the muscles and connective tissue to reduce the hypersensitivity of the points and increase nutrition and blood flow into the affected area. These techniques help to break the cycle of pain that the central nervous system has created and restore normal function to the affected area.
Pregnancy Massage is the use of various massage techniques to support the new mother and her new baby in the physiologic, structural, and emotional changes that will be taking place in the next several months. Massage can typically start after the new mother’s first trimester of pregnancy and can continue through the entire pregnancy and into the labor process. The benefits of pregnancy massage assist in reducing the discomfort of a new mother’s changing body, including blood pressure changes, stress and anxiety, edema in legs and hands, pain, and hormonal changes. After pregnancy a new mother will also benefit from massage. Massage will help facilitate the body’s return to its pre-pregnancy state by managing edema in her legs and feet, assisting with hormonal changes, reducing the stress and anxiety of being a new mother, and managing aches and pains of pregnancy. A new mother can attend massage a few days after giving birth.
