A back-to-school must have: a well-fitted backpack

For kids of all ages, back-to-school shopping is an exciting time, it softens the sting of summer’s end!

And as parents and caregivers, we know the most anticipated item on those back to school supplies lists is the backpack! Every year brings new trends in styles, colors, designs and popular cartoon or video game character depictions.

The bag your student chooses will be with them every day for the entire school year, so of course it’s important to let them pick something they love. It’s just as important to make sure the one they choose fits week and supports their back, neck, and shoulders — keeping them comfortable, healthy and ready to learn.

As you shop for back to school supplies, put backpack safety first.

What does “backpack safety” mean?

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that backpack safety is no small matter. In fact, from 2019 to 2021, an estimated 1,200 children under age 19 were treated in emergency rooms each year for backpack-related injuries.

When a backpack doesn’t fit properly, is worn incorrectly, or is overloaded, it can quickly shift from being a convenient school essential to a source of pain.

Heavy or ill-fitting backpacks can:

  • Strain muscles and joints
  • Cause neck, shoulder, and back pain
  • Affect posture and daily activities

Kids’ spines are still developing, so even mild discomfort shouldn’t be ignored. The National Spine Health Foundation warns that over time, poor backpack habits can cause spinal compression, muscle imbalances, and even nerve damage.

How to choose the right size backpack for your child

A poor-fitting backpack is one of the most common causes of lower back pain in kids, so choosing the right size should be a top priority. Have your child try on the backpack they want, then check these fit guidelines:

Choosing the right size backpack not only ensures a proper fit — it also helps prevent overpacking. When a pack is proportionate to your child’s body, its capacity is more likely to align with recommended weight limits.

A widely accepted guideline from musculoskeletal health experts is the 10% rule: a child’s backpack should weigh no more than 10% of their body weight. For example, if your child weighs 80 pounds, their backpack should be no heavier than 8 pounds when fully packed.

Sticking to this limit helps reduce the load on growing spines and developing muscles, making it easier for kids to maintain good posture and avoid fatigue throughout the school day.

Beyond size: functional features to look for in a school backpack
