A woman examines her quilting project

I have hip arthritis & sitting makes it worse. Since I am a quilter, it makes it difficult. I am looking at maybe getting a chair cushion to help. Would this be a good idea & what should I look for?

Things to Know

  • A wedge cushion can reduce hip stress during prolonged sitting
  • Movement breaks every 20-30 minutes are essential for managing arthritis pain
  • PT can create a personalized program to improve sitting tolerance

Hip arthritis can make activities you love — like quilting — more challenging, especially when they require extended periods of sitting. While we can’t make specific recommendations without a full examination, we can offer general guidance that may help you get back to your craft more comfortably.

Hip arthritis is a normal age-related change that causes joint pain, stiffness, and activity limitations. The discomfort often intensifies with prolonged sitting because maintaining one position places sustained pressure on the joint. The good news? Simple modifications can make a meaningful difference.

Choosing the right chair cushion

A cushion can be a valuable tool in managing hip arthritis symptoms while quilting. Here’s what to look for:

Wedge-style cushions are commonly recommended for people with hip arthritis. These cushions create a slight decline from the hips down to the knees, which can help reduce stress on the hip joint. When selecting a cushion, aim for positioning that allows you to maintain proper chair ergonomics:

  • Good low-back support
  • Feet flat on the ground
  • Hips and knees at approximately 90-degree angles
  • Thighs at a slight decline

The right cushion should feel supportive without being too firm or too soft, and it should maintain its shape throughout your quilting sessions.

Beyond the cushion: Movement matters most

While a quality cushion can help, the most effective strategy for managing hip arthritis during prolonged activities is regular movement breaks. Sitting in any position for extended periods can aggravate arthritis symptoms, even with the perfect cushion.

Try this approach:

These brief interruptions allow your hip joint to change positions and reduce the sustained compression that contributes to discomfort.

How physical therapy can help quilters with hip arthritis

If you find that cushions and movement breaks aren’t providing enough relief, physical therapy may be beneficial. A physical therapist will conduct a comprehensive examination to assess:

a patient sits on a balance ball with a leg extended while a therapist assesses his knee and hip strength and mobility

Based on these findings, your physical therapist can create a personalized program designed to improve your tolerance for sitting while pursuing your passion. Treatment may include targeted exercises, manual therapy, and strategies specific to your needs as a quilter.

Getting back to what you love

We hope this information helps you continue enjoying your quilting more comfortably. The combination of a supportive wedge cushion, frequent movement breaks, and proper sitting posture can make a significant difference in managing hip arthritis symptoms.

If your pain persists despite these modifications, we encourage you to consult with a physical therapist who can provide a tailored approach to your specific situation.
