At Therapeutic Associates North Portland, our concussion care team is committed to guiding you through recovery with compassion, communication, and the latest in evidence-based care.

It’s our mission to ensure every patient feels supported, understood, and empowered — from day one.

When I started my certification through Complete Concussion Management Inc. (CCMI)®, I knew I was joining something bigger than a checklist of protocols. CCMI is one of the leaders in the rehab space for both acute and chronic concussion care, and through them, I’ve gained access to the most current, evidence-based practices. But more importantly, I’ve found tools that genuinely empower my patients — and a collaborative care model that makes a difference.

As an athletic trainer, I get to partner closely with Britt Lademann, one of our clinic’s expert physical therapists, to deliver a truly team-based approach to concussion care at our clinic. Together, we blend our unique skills to support patients through every step of their recovery.

Concussion recovery with team-based care

When a patient comes in with a suspected concussion, our process is designed to address every angle of their symptoms. We begin with an evaluation that feels a lot like a physical therapy appointment.

Britt starts by taking a thorough history and screening the cervical spine for any cervicogenic factors — symptoms that may actually be caused by neck dysfunction rather than the concussion itself. Since these symptoms can overlap, it’s essential to determine the true source in order to guide treatment effectively. With Britt’s expertise in spinal and manual therapy, we can ensure that nothing is missed in those early stages.

Once Britt completes her assessment and assigns a home exercise program, I take over the second half of the appointment. My focus is on concussion-specific testing — identifying red flags, tracking post-injury symptom scores, and providing education about what a concussion is and what to expect in the coming days and weeks.

We continue this team approach throughout the patient’s care. Follow-up visits often start with Britt, who may apply manual techniques to the neck that help ease symptoms and improve response to exercise. I then guide the patient through more targeted vision, vestibular, and exertion-based testing — such as the Buffalo concussion treadmill test — along with exercises designed to improve tolerance and function.

Why we chose Complete Concussion Management Inc.® — and why it matters for you

One of the best parts of working with CCMI is access to their concussion tracking app — available for free to all patients, not just athletes. This tool allows patients to:

  • Log and monitor daily symptoms
  • Track patterns and triggers in real time
  • Access in-depth neurocognitive testing (even without a baseline!)
  • Receive personalized return-to-learn, return-to-work, and return-to-play guidance

Neurocognitive testing has historically been reserved for high-level athletes. We’re proud to offer it to everyone, because concussion care shouldn’t depend on where you play — it should focus on how you heal.

When you come in for your first appointment, we’ll help you get set up with the app right away, so you can start tracking and feeling more in control of your recovery.
