Dance Medicine Strength & Conditioning Workshop

Dance Medicine Physical Therapist Amy Benton has teamed up with Professional Dancer and STOTT® PILATES Instructor Anna Marra to develop a dance-specific strength and conditioning workshop. The class offers cross-training solutions for a dancer’s greatest technical challenges by focusing on strengthening the entire body to the distinct, precise needs of the dancer. Combining principles of yoga, Pilates, and dynamic strengthening in a progressive, 4-week workshop, this exercise system addresses any areas of weakness or imbalance through customized strength training exercises while informing dancers of safe and effective self-care.

Amy received her doctorate in physical therapy from Simmons College in Boston, MA in 2008. She specializes in working with dancers and aerialists of all ages and abilities. She is a Certified Manual Physical Therapist (CMPT), Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), trained in the Functional Movement System (FMS & SFMA) and ASTYM® soft tissue techniques. Amy utilizes Pilates and yoga to provide comprehensive, technique-centered rehabilitation.

Amy was a dance major at Goucher College and went on to dance professionally in Boston. She is now the lead physical therapist for the Portland Ballet. She is an active member of the Dance Wire health care network, and a member of the International Association for Dance Medicine and Science.

Anna Marra - InstructorAnna Marra
Certified STOTT® PILATES Instructor

Anna Marra is a fully certified STOTT® PILATES Instructor, professional dancer and freelancer. Since 2013, she has completed training in Therapeutic Pilates with emphasis in Postural and Dynamic Movement Assessment, STOTT® Injuries and Special Populations course, and specialty tracks for Scoliosis, Osteoporosis, Pre/Post-Natal, and Hyper and Hypomobility populations. Practicing Pilates alongside her dance career ultimately cultivated Anna’s passion for teaching and sharing the importance of self care and cross-training with fellow dancers.

She has performed locally and internationally with BodyVox, the Oregon Symphony, Michael Curry Design, Eowyn Emerald & Dancers, Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre NW, the Seattle Symphony, Muddy Feet Contemporary Dance, and runs a project-based production company, DownRight Productions.


WORKSHOP DETAILS:

• Cost of Workshop: $160
• Space is limited to 8 participants to provide individual attention.
• Participants should bring: Tennis shoes, yoga mat, water bottle, towel, and therabands (if you have).
• Classes will be held at our clinic (837 SW 1st Ave, Suite 150 PortlandOR 97204)

ADDITIONAL COVID PRECAUTIONS:

The health and safety of our patients and employees is always our top priority. As such, here are a few additional precautions we will be taking:

• Doors will open 10 minutes before scheduled class begins.
• Only the participant will be allowed in the building.
• There will be no waiting allowed in the lobby area.
• Participant temperature will be checked at door upon arrival.
• Answer a series of questions regarding current health symptoms.
• Hand washing required before and after class.
• A face covering must be worn.
