Causes of Low Back Pain
Low back pain often occurs due to overuse, strain, or injury. Age-related changes in bone strength, muscular tone and elasticity, and the disc structure leave the low back susceptible to injury. Overuse can be caused by too much bending, twisting, or lifting, and sometimes by too much sitting. Strains are caused by either too much force or the use of improper body mechanics. Just as often, however, the actual cause of low back pain isn’t known.
Although low back pain is rarely serious or life threatening, there are several conditions that may contribute to low back pain, such as:
- Degenerative disk disease
- Lumbar spinal stenosis
- Herniated disk
- Tumors of the spine
Lifestyle factors can also have an effect. Increased body mass, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, depression, and life stressors can all increase your risk of experiencing low back pain and/or hamper your recovery from low back pain.
