As a physical therapist, I often encounter patients who are surprised to learn that physical therapy can help with jaw pain, often diagnosed as temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD). This condition affects the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which connects your jaw to your skull, and can lead to pain, clicking, locking, and difficulty with chewing, speaking, or yawning.

TMD is more common than many realize and can result from a variety of factors including stress, poor posture, trauma, or oral habits like clenching and grinding. Fortunately, physical therapy offers a non-invasive, effective path to relief through advanced temporomandibular dysfunction treatment.

What Physical Therapy Can Do for TMD

  1. Reducing pain and Restoring Mobility
Limited jaw movement is a hallmark of TMD. Through soft tissue and joint mobilization, we help reduce pain and muscle tension while restoring normal range of motion.
  2. Postural Correction
Forward head posture and rounded shoulders can strain the jaw and neck muscles. We assess and correct posture through exercises that strengthen the neck and upper back, helping to relieve pressure on the TMJ and improve overall alignment.
  3. Stress Management
Stress often leads to unconscious clenching or grinding. We incorporate relaxation techniques like diaphragmatic breathing and mindfulness to reduce muscle hyperactivity and prevent flare-ups.
  4. Myofunctional Training
One of the most transformative additions to TMD care is orofacial myofunctional therapy — a specialized approach that retrains the muscles of the face, tongue, and jaw to function properly.

Myofunctional training focuses on:

  • Correcting tongue posture (resting on the palate)
  • Promoting nasal breathing over mouth breathing
  • Improving swallowing mechanics
  • Strengthening facial and jaw muscles

These exercises help restore balance and coordination among the muscles that support the TMJ, reducing strain and improving function.

A holistic, personalized approach to jaw-pain relief

Every patient’s experience with TMD is unique. That’s why we tailor treatment plans to address individual symptoms, lifestyle factors, and goals. Whether your pain is mild or chronic, physical therapy can be a powerful tool to restore comfort and function.

If you’re struggling with jaw pain, consider consulting a physical therapist trained in the treatment of TMD. Relief might be closer than you think.
