How physical therapy can help you shake off winter sluggishness

As the days grow longer and the sun starts peeking through more often, many of us feel that familiar itch to get moving again. But let’s be honest — coming out of winter can feel like a real challenge to start moving again. The colder, darker months often leave us feeling stiff, sluggish, and low on energy. Even with spring’s natural boost of renewal, our bodies might still need a little help catching up.

That’s where physical therapy comes in, not just as a tool for recovery, but as a proactive way to reawaken your body and reclaim your vitality.

Why physical therapy is not just for injuries

When most people think of physical therapy, they might picture post-surgical rehab or recovery from an injury. But PT can do so much more. At its core physical therapy is about optimizing movement. When your body moves well everything works better. Your posture straightens, movement feels better, and energy levels naturally rise.

Specific PT treatments and movement strategies can help target some of the most common post-winter complaints:

  • Postural fatigue from hunching over desks and devices
  • Joint stiffness from inactivity due to the cyclic nature of your recreation
  • General sluggishness due to reduced movement and activity

Your PT can guide you through exercises that increase mobility, build strength, and improve your body’s ability to move efficiently.

Easy spring exercises to try at home

You don’t need to wait for your first PT appointment to start feeling better. Try these simple movements to ease your body out of its winter funk, take a minute from your work desk or stand up from the couch and try these movements:

Targets: thoracic spine mobility, postural muscles (especially the lower trapezius and rhomboids)

Begin in a standing position with feet hip-width apart. Reach both arms overhead, fully extending through the shoulders and spine. Hold for 5–10 seconds. Then sweep the arms outward and back, actively retracting the shoulder blades to engage the upper back. Repeat for 3–5 cycles to counteract forward head posture and slouched thoracic positioning common during winter months.

Targets: spinal rotation, oblique activation, shoulder mobility

While standing with a slight bend in the knees, gently rotate the torso to one side, extending both arms forwards palms touching. Reach arm opposite of torso rotation across body at shoulder height until torso is full rotated to other side. Return to start position and repeat. Perform 5–10 reps per side. This movement improves transverse plane mobility and is great for reintroducing spinal rotation.

While seated or standing, alternate between lifting your toes off the ground (dorsiflexion) and lifting your heels (plantarflexion). Perform 20–30 repetitions, 3 times. This is particularly effective for stimulating blood flow to the lower extremities and reactivating neuromuscular control in the calves, ankles, and feet.

Merging PT with your spring routine

Spring is prime time for getting back to the activities you love — hiking, biking, gardening, you name it.

Physical therapy can be the secret weapon that keeps you doing those things safely and with more ease. Whether you’re looking to build endurance for weekend trail adventures or simply want to kneel in your garden without nagging knee pain, a physical therapist can help you prep your body for it all.

Physical therapy can also help you avoid injury as you jump back into more activity. A personalized plan can strengthen muscles you haven’t used in a while and help correct movement patterns that might cause strain or pain.
