As administrative coordinator, Jocelyn Davis appreciates how her role allows her to get to know the patients whose healing journey takes them to Therapeutic Associates in West Linn. She is passionate about helping people feel better and get back to the things they love. It’s that people-first mindset that also inspired Jocelyn to pursue a career as a massage therapist. Therapeutic massage, she explains, is a great modality to pair with physical therapy – not only does it bring another perspective to a patient’s treatment, but also promotes time and space for relaxation and rejuvenation. Her expertise allows Jocelyn to help increase patients’ range of motion and mobility while also decreasing their pain and stress. For those battling an injury or looking to increase their sports performance, massage therapy can be an excellent tool, especially when paired with PT. But whatever brings a patient to her for massage, Jocelyn loves being there for people. As someone who enjoys the outdoors and being active, she understands the importance of pain-free movement.
Q&A with Jocelyn Davis
Q: What inspired you to become a massage therapist?
I was inspired by looking at so many different options in healthcare. I didn’t know what I wanted to do coming out of my undergraduate studies. And after shadowing through a bunch of different healthcare professions, I went back to my first inclination, which was massage. I went and shadowed with a couple massage therapists and confirmed my true love was really massage and wanting to do that as a career. So when I found that out, I researched schools in the area and I found East West in Portland. And when I went to do a tour with them, I loved the facilities. I loved what they had to offer in terms of educating their students and how they prepare their students for careers afterward.
Q: What is your favorite way to spend a day off?
My favorite way is somewhere outside. I love taking hikes or walks outside. I love to play golf. That’s my new endeavor since being out of my undergraduate studies is taking on golf. I love paddle boarding. My husband and I tend to go out to the Willamette River and go paddle boarding a lot and really anything that gets me outside.
Q: What is an experience you’ve had that you can’t wait to do again?
Traveling to Europe! So, I got to travel to Europe my junior year of undergrad to do a study abroad program. And my husband and I are planning another trip to Europe coming up to go to Italy. And I cannot wait to do it again.
Q: What is your favorite sport to watch or play?
I am biased because I grew up playing softball. So, softball or baseball, anytime it’s on, I love to watch it. I understand that sport the most out of any of them. So, I can nitpick it as much as I want to. And I understand the intricacies of the game. So, I think that’s what makes it the most fun for me to watch.
Q: What is a hobby that you’re passionate about outside of work?
I do love to play golf, it is my main hobby right now. I took a break when I was in massage school just to focus on studying. So, I didn’t give a lot of time to play. But since being out of school, my husband and I have been spending a lot of time out at the golf driving range and practicing at home. So, I’m really excited to get into the summertime. I’m a fair-weather golfer. So, the spring and summer is really my time to shine. And I’m really excited to get back out.
Q: How do you practice golf at home?
Oh my gosh. So, there’s a curtain that separates our home. And so we have little wiffle balls and a tiny little turf mat. And we full-on have our in-house driving range, if you will, inside our house.
